                             COUNSELOR ROLE AND PHILOSOPHY

                                                     ROLE

The role of the counselor is to support the healthy growth and development of the total child (personal/social, emotional, and academic and career wise) at school, home, and the community.

                                                PHILOSOPHY

                                                                   Human Nature
I believe that all students can learn in a developmentally appropriate manner and deserve the right to be provided with counseling services if needed. Each child is different. I believe that as humans, we have an inner man that wants to help others and as a counselor, I plan to make it a point to “reach those children now regarded as unreachable.”(Erford, Lee, Newsome & Rock, 2011, p. 292) I believe every child has a need for love, support, respect and a need for accomplishment which will aide them in their academic process.

                                                                   People Change
As times change, people change, and as a counselor, I need to keep up with the latest interventions and preventions. With all the latest technology, people now have different issues added to the already known issues such as teen pregnancy, drugs, alcohol, suicide, grief, etc. People also change due to the circumstances in their lives. From the time we are born, to the elementary years, the middle school years, and then the high school years, kids’lives change drastically depending on the situations and circumstances they face. As counselors, we must be aware of the developmental stages of our students, their family life and their environment to help us better understand the changes that are taking place in their lives.

                                                Counselor - Expert or Collaborator
To collaborate means "to work jointly with others, to cooperate with" and this is exactly what I will do with the parents, school system, students, support personnel and community as needed. I must realize and help others to realize that a counselor is a vital part of the school team, but that we are all needed to achieve the best results for the young people we have the privilege of working with.
